Automating Ontological Annotation with WordNet
نویسندگان
چکیده
Semantic Web applications require robust and accurate annotation tools that are capable of automating the assignment of ontological classes to words in naturally occurring text (ontological annotation). Most current ontologies do not include rich lexical databases and are therefore not easily integrated with word sense disambiguation algorithms that are needed to automate ontological annotation. WordNet provides a potentially ideal solution to this problem as it offers a highly structured lexical conceptual representation that has been extensively used to develop word sense disambiguation algorithms. However, WordNet has not been designed as an ontology, and while it can be easily turned into one, the result of doing this would present users with serious practical limitations due to the great number of concepts (synonym sets) it contains. Moreover, mapping WordNet to an existing ontology may be difficult and requires substantial labor. We propose to overcome these limitations by developing an analytical platform that (1) provides a WordNet-based ontology offering a manageable and yet comprehensive set of concept classes, (2) leverages the lexical richness of WordNet to give an extensive characterization of concept class in terms of lexical instances, and (3) integrates a class recognition algorithm that automates the assignment of concept classes to words in naturally occurring text. The ensuing framework makes available an ontological annotation platform that can be effectively integrated with intelligence analysis systems to facilitate evidence marshaling and sustain the creation and validation of inference models.

متن کاملComplete and Consistent Annotation of WordNet using the Top Concept Ontology
This paper presents the complete and consistent ontological annotation of the nominal part of WordNet. The annotation has been carried out using the semantic features defined in the EuroWordNet Top Concept Ontology and made available to the NLP community. Up to now only an initial core set of 1,024 synsets, the so-called Base Concepts, was ontologized in such a way. The work has been achieved b...
متن کاملExploiting Structure, Annotation, and Ontological Knowledge for Automatic Classification of XML Data
This paper investigates how to automatically classify schemaless XML data into a user-defined topic directory. The main focus is on constructing appropriate feature spaces on which a classifier operates. In addition to the usual text-based term frequency vectors, we study XML twigs and tag paths as extended features that can be combined with text term occurrences in XML elements. Moreover, we s...
متن کاملWord Sense Disambiguation Using Semi-Supervised Naive Bayes with Ontological Constraints
Background. Word sense disambiguation (WSD) is the task of mapping an ambiguous word to its correct sense given its context. As high-quality sensetagged data is scarce and expensive to obtain, attention has shifted from fullysupervised to semi-supervised and knowledge-based approaches to WSD that rely on a lexical knowledge base such as WordNet instead of large amounts of hand-labeled data. Wha...
متن کاملAutomating Gene Expression Annotation for Mouse Embryo
It is of high biomedical interest to identify gene interactions and networks that are associated with developmental and physiological functions in the mouse embryo. There are now large datasets with both spatial and ontological annotation of the spatio-temporal patterns of geneexpression that provide a powerful resource to discover potential mechanisms of embryo organisation. Ontological annota...
